作者方泽林（Steven Van Zoeren），又名范佐仁，1986年博士毕业于哈佛大学东亚语言与文明系，师从著名汉学家史华慈（Benjamin Schwartz）美。曾为哈佛学会成员，后任教于斯坦福大学亚洲语言文学系，著有《诗与人格：传统中国的阅读、注疏与诠释》等。现居美国德州奥斯汀，近期主要从事杜诗的翻译与研究。 译者赵四方，复旦大学历史学学士、博士，浙江大学历史学博士后，曾于德国图宾根大学访学。现为华东师范大学历史学系讲师（晨晖学者）。研究方向为中国学术思想史。在《学术月刊》、《史学理论研究》、《新经学》等刊物发表论文、书评十余篇。

本书作者把研究对象确定在中国古代社会中的法律，以期对中国历史上的法律提供一种社会学的解释。在兼跨社会学、历史学、法律这三个学科领域之间，开创了法律史与社会史结合的研究范式，形成了一种新的学术研究体系，被称为“法律社会史”。本书是这一领域的经典著作，初版至今已60余年，并有作者自己的英文译本传世，在西方汉学界广有影响。
